Better search engine placement tips

Here are some simple tips how to make a better website for your visitors and for search engines and get a better search engine placement

How to get a better search engine placement

  • Target your website to your potential customers. Learn as much as you can about your customers and the way they use your website (and, if you can, find out how they use your competitors sites). Then use this learning to improve search engine ranking and get a better search engine placement
  • Use title tag. The title tag should be no more than 40-60 characters (longer than that and it will be cut off in some search engines). Use relevant keywords in your title tag. Using relevant website title is the best way to get a better search engine placement
  • Use keywords tag. This tag should contain up to 20 keywords that appear on your webpage. Never include keywords that do not appear on that page - in some search engines your website will be penalized for this. Do not repeat the same keyword - this is called 'keyword stuffing' and it is disliked by the search engines.
  • Instead of separating each keyword with a comma, just separate them using a space. By doing this, it will allow the search engines to combine your keywords into phrases, for people who use phrases to search.
  • Use descriptinon tag. This tag should be no more than 200 characters and try to include your keywords in this tag.
  • Try to use headings. Headings are rated more important than the rest of the webpage by search engines. To take advantage of this, you should have your keywords in the page headings. If the header tag "H1" is to large for your website, you should format it with html or css code to make it smaller.
  • Make sure webpage content is relevant, accurate and up-to-date. Provide accurate and relevant content and keep it up-to-date.
  • Use image alt tags. Search engines do not index images. If you don't have image alt tags, people who have the 'view images' function turned off will be unable to navigate through your site - in place of your button they will just see an empty space. Image alt tags are also verry usefull for search engine spiders. ALT tags that contain keywords can also be used to improve search engine placement and help to get a better search engine ranking.
  • Use external Cascading Style Sheets (CSS) and Java Script files to reduce page size and make the download time much faster. It will allow the spider to index your web page faster and can help your ranking.
  • Do not use frames unless it's really important. Search engines find it difficult to index websites with frames. If you are using frames usualy you cant get a better search engine placement.
  • Try to use a websafe colours. This is usefull for optimizing your website colours for differend monitors.
  • Create menu on the left-hand side of a webpage.
  • Add a touch of interactivity to your website (message board, feedback form, guestbook ..), which make your visitors come back often.
  • Check for broken links on your webpage. A site that contains broken links gives a bad impression to visitors and is a frequent cause of lost sales. Also, the major search engines and directories will not list your page if it contains any broken links or missing images. About 5% of all links on the internet are broken.
  • Focus your web page on the topic and keep your pages concise. Many search engine optimization programs and professionals suggest keeping your pages under 750 words.
  • Design pages for cross-browser compatibility. Although internet explorer dominates, make sure your site can be viewed in other browsers (Firefox, Opera, Mozilla and Netscape...), that way you will not unintentionally reduce the number of visitors to your website.
  • Avoid using scrollbars horizontally. There is nothing more annoying than having to scroll both vertically and horizontally at all screen lengths.
  • To minimize download time, think twice on how to use graphic. Use tables with different background colors to add life to your pages. Make sure that search engines cannot read graphics and also for your visitors so that they can have something to read when waiting for the graphics to load. The WIDTH and HEIGHT attributes allow your page to load faster, as the browser knows in advance how much space the image requires. To find out the width and height of any image, just double click on the image file. Optimizing webpage size is helpfull for get a better search engine placement.
  • Avoid using too complex tables when laying out your page but to keep them simple for the search engine spiders.
  • Keep updating your website. People will not return if they find the same old stuff lying there.
  • Provide links to other websites, even your competitors, if possible. This shows you are not conceited and are willing to help your visitors to find what they need.
  • Keep your web pages short. It can be a nuisance for your custommers to scroll and scroll and scroll to get to the end of your webpage. If you need to post a long text, just divede them into smaller webpages.
  • Make your site’s navigation logical and clear. Ensure the most important and most often-accessed information is easy to find. Keep you links up-to-date.
  • Use consistent design elements. Select one or two fonts and use with them throughout your web site.
  • Do not use a full flash website. Such web site may look very appealing, but that's the last thing your visitors are going to wait for to load. Instead try embedding Flash on your web pages to get the same look.
  • Check your web site load time. No one wants to site and wait a minute for a page to show up. Slow loading websites can attribute to lost sales for your business! Many customers will actually avoid a website that takes a long time to load. Optimize graphic size and avoid putting an image on a page unless it adds something for the visitor.
  • Do not use too many animated buttons and banners throughout your web site, because your visitors will not be able to browse comfortably with all that blinking going on and will surf elsewhere.
  • Make webpage text easy to read. You should ensure that there is enough contrast between the text and background. Webages that are hard to read or webpages that have hidden text, loose credibility.
  • Give your customers support by providing elements such as FAQ’s, help web pages, a web site map, terms of use and a privacy policy.
  • Begin your website now. If you are in an industry which isn’t widely represented on the internet yet, so much the better - you’ll be able to start off with a larger market share. It's estimated that there are about 200 million people using the internet.
  • We hope that those better search engine placement tips will help you to get better search engine placement
